MdBio Foundation is hiring a team of enthusiastic individuals to operate the Verizon Innovative Learning explorer lab, a custom designed 45-foot bus that will travel to middle schools in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In addition to providing instruction to middle school students aboard the bus, the team will also assist in the development of associated curriculum, coordinating school visits, and moving and placement of the vehicle.
The explorer lab is currently being built in Burbank, California and will travel across the United States for a “road show.” The road show will include a series of school visits and PR events between March and August 2017. In August 2017, the explorer lab will arrive in Washington, DC and will serve the DC Public School system for the 2017/2018 school year.
Instructor
The Education Outreach Instructor is an enthusiastic individual who provides instruction to middle school students aboard the Verizon Innovative Learning explorer lab, a custom designed 45-foot bus that travels to schools in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In addition to providing instruction aboard the bus, the Instructor will also assist in the development of associated curriculum, coordinating school visits, and coordinating and assisting schools with their requirements of any evaluation program. This position reports to the Vice President of Education. Salary range is $40,000 – $50,000.
Instructor Responsibilities include:
Teaching onboard the explorer lab, including:
- Teaching age appropriate activities and extended or enrichment opportunities to students
- Develop, write and present curriculum, activities and materials for middle school students and teachers in accordance with Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and local content standards
- Coordinate and schedule mobile laboratory school visits and events
- Coordinate and conduct professional development for educators
- Staff after-school events, such as family science night, and public events, such as conferences, festivals, and sporting events.
Serve as the public face for a cross-country road show, including both school visits and PR events, between March and August 2017, with responsibilities including:
- Serve as the public face for events and public outreach activities that promote, enhance, and protect the Verizon Innovative Learning brand
- Lead a diverse audience including children and adults in micro learning experiences onboard the mobile laboratory
- Travel to support road show and other events.
Instructor Position requirements:
- Minimum of a B.S. in science, engineering, mathematics, technology, or education required; one year of professional or teaching experience preferred.
- This position requires an individual with outstanding customer service and attitude who is friendly, outgoing and has the ability to work well as part of a team. The Instructor must be able to work independently with initiative to manage own workload without much supervision. They must be flexible and adapt well in unpredictable situations.
- Extensive travel with possible overnight stays across the United States is required. The Instructor must have own transportation and be available for day, evening and occasional weekend functions. Travel anticipated 75 – 100 percent between March and August 2017. Travel to expected to be 25 percent during the school year.
AV & Technical Coordinator
The Technical Coordinator oversees technology (hardware and software) aboard the Verizon Innovative Learning explorer lab, a custom designed 45-foot bus that travels to schools in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In addition to facilitating instruction aboard the bus, the Coordinator may also assist in coordinating school visits, moving and placement of the vehicle, and assisting schools with their requirements of any evaluation program. This position reports to the Vice President of Education. Salary range is $40,000 – $55,000.
AV & Technical Coordinator Responsibilities include:
The AV & Technical Coordinator oversees technology (hardware, software, and internet) aboard the Verizon Innovative Learning explorer lab, a custom designed 45-foot immersive reality experience for middle school students that travels to schools in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
The explorer lab is currently being built by West Coast Customs in Burbank, California and will travel across the United States in a series of school visits and PR events between May and August 2017. This position includes fully-funded travel and lodging for this “road show.” It is expected that this position will involve full-time travel during the road show period. In August 2017, the explorer lab will arrive in Washington, DC and will serve the DC Public School system for the 2017/2018 school year.
This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits.
In addition to facilitating instruction aboard the bus, the Coordinator may also assist in coordinating school visits, moving and placement of the vehicle, and assisting schools with their requirements of any evaluation program. This position reports to the Vice President of Education.
Responsibilities include:
Managing and troubleshooting the explorer lab technology onboard the explorer lab, with responsibilities including:
- Maintains operations of the explorer lab hardware and software, to include 11 networked televisions, local wifi network, and 20 student gaming tablets with server. Responsible for accurate and timely setup, operation, and breakdown of intermediate audiovisual equipment as listed in the technical qualifications section.
- Be responsible for troubleshooting and restarting the technology experience aboard the bus, including: sound, LED lights synced to the experience, multi-screen video walls, and the associated video and game software packages on multiple Windows 10 computers and Android tablets.
- Setup, maintain and troubleshoot local WiFi network for the explorer lab’s (20) student gaming tablets and computer/server
- Provide onsite, full-time troubleshooting support to explorer lab teacher team during scheduled school visits. As needed, staff after-school events, such as family science night, and public events, such as conferences, festivals, and sporting events (special events will be scheduled in advance)
- When all equipment is working property, assist explorer lab teaching team with the student experience. Interface with students to share your passion for this job and to get them excited about technology careers.
- Coordinates with outside technical support vendors to repair or replace computer hardware and software as necessary
- Working knowledge of the following equipment is required:
- Audio (including digital audio and audio Processing – EQ, Compression)
- Video (including LCD screens, switching, and multiple array systems)
- Lighting (basic dimming and control)
- Windows computers & tablets
- House Sound: Wireless microphones, power speakers, 2-24 channel mixers
- Digital video playback/record systems
- Basic Electrical and Power Distribution
- Display Interface USB Switching Loading Apps/Drives Basic MS Office (Excel/Word/PP)
- IP Addressing: configuring a wireless network with up to 30 simultaneous components, windows addressing, knowledge of DHCP/static addressing, switches/hubs/WAPS
- Wireless Networking/ Troubleshooting
Travel with the explorer lab on a cross-country road show, including both school visits and PR events, between May and August 2017, with responsibilities including:

- Provide onsite, full-time troubleshooting technical support to explorer lab teacher team during scheduled events.

- At the conclusion of each event, pack up and stow all explorer lab AV and computer equipment for travel.
Support technical aspects of MdBio’s two additional mobile laboratories as needed.
- Provide occasional technical troubleshooting for microphones and audio systems, Kangaroo mobile computers, and touch screen televisions on the Mobile eXploration Lab and MdBioLab.
- Coordinate with outside technical support vendors to repair or replace computer hardware and software as necessary
Position requirements:
- Associate’s degree in a technology program or STEM field plus one year of professional experience is desired. Equivalent hands-on work experience in audiovisual will be considered.
- This position requires an individual with outstanding customer service and attitude who is friendly, outgoing and has the ability to work well as part of a team. The Technical Coordinator must be able to work independently with initiative to manage own workload without much supervision. They must be flexible and adapt well in unpredictable situations.
- Extensive travel with possible overnight stays across the United States is required. The Technical Coordinator must have own transportation and be available for day, evening and occasional weekend functions. Travel anticipated 75 – 100 percent between May and August 2017. The fine print
MdBio Foundation offers many benefits to its employees, including paid leave, health insurance, 401(k), and tuition reimbursement. This is a full-time, year-round position which is currently grant funded through June 2018. We expect that funding will continue past this time, however, it is not guaranteed.
