Program Benefits

This professional development for STEM educators in formal/informal STEM programs will use an interactive, experiential, critical arts-based, culturally relevant framework to elucidate the “defining and operationalizing of equity” in all aspects of their STEM work. Educator participants will:

  • Deeply explore relevant topics such as
    • Defining equity in STEM education
    • Equity audits
    • Promoting equity through culturally relevant STEM pedagogy
    • Planning programs that engage students, teachers, family and community
    • Curriculum design
  • Engage with a passionate peer community, focused on equity in STEM education
  • Develop an equity action plan
  • Receive a $2,000 stipend plus travel expenses for bootcamps
  • Earn a microcredential in STEM equity

Schedule of Events (as of September 11, 2023)

This is a yearlong program, consisting of six virtual sessions and two weekend bootcamps. Participants must commit to attending five of six virtual sessions and both mini bootcamps (travel expenses paid).

  • Saturday, September 30 –  one hour virtual session (on Zoom)
  • Saturday, October 28 – one hour virtual session (on Zoom)
  • Saturday, November 18 – one hour virtual session (on Zoom)
  • Saturday & Sunday January 20 – 21, 2024 – two day, in person mini bootcamp, tentatively scheduled for University of Arizona in Tempe, Arizona
  • Three, one-hour virtual sessions during Spring 2024, dates to be agreed at the start of the cohort
  • Saturday & Sunday, April 27 – 28, 2024 – two day, in person mini bootcamp, tentatively scheduled for Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland

This program is jointly presented by Alamo STEM Ecosystem (ASE), Arizona State University Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College (ASU MLFTC), Learning Undefeated, and the Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM (TIES), and funded through the DoD STEM DSEC Innovation Bloc, which strategically addresses programming gaps, expands reach, and strengthens DSEC alignment to evolving DoD priorities including building skills in support of critical technology areas to enhance technical capabilities for the future.
