AT&T helps MdBio Foundation Deliver STEM Programs in Maryland
Contribution supports hands-on activities for middle and high school students
GERMANTOWN, Md., November 9, 2018 — The MdBio Foundation received $40,000 from AT&T to support a program that offers underserved middle and high school students with hands-on, STEM-based learning experiences with the goal of increasing awareness of STEM-related careers.
The announcement was made during MdBio’s 10th Advancing Tomorrow’s Leaders in STEM (ATLAS) college and career readiness symposium at Montgomery College’s campus in Germantown, Md. According to MdBio, ATLAS brings students typically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers together with Maryland’s leading employers to learn about career opportunities and foster the development of a strong pipeline of skilled STEM workers that will fuel the state’s growing science and technology sectors.
“By supporting groups like MdBio we’re creating opportunities for young people to prepare for rewarding careers, especially at a time when so many jobs are unfilled in the U.S. today because of the lack of qualified applicants,” said La Tara Harris, AT&T’s regional director for External Affairs, who delivered closing remarks at the symposium. “We support programs that prepare people for college and careers – especially STEM careers – and MdBio does that and more.”
Brian Gaines, CEO of MdBio, said that more than 10,000 Maryland students will benefit from this program this year.
“MdBio is thrilled to receive AT&T’s continuing support for our STEM education programs for the 2018/19 school year. This contribution will support hands-on laboratory activities for more than 10,000 Maryland middle and high school students onboard our flagship mobile laboratory program as well as support deeper impact experiences that introduce students to STEM concepts and careers. We appreciate our longtime relationship with AT&T and look forward to an exciting and impactful school year,” said Brian Gaines, MdBio CEO.
